Engines and Engineering

The internal combustion engine is probably the most importantly worked on part of any motor vehicle. The engine of a vehicle must be kept in tip top condition to attain the mileage one would expect from a modern car. Motor cars have been refined over the last decade or so probing the science of producing more fuel efficient gas guzzlers that will certainly produce more and more power. This new engineering age process is shifting us more into disposable times like never before as engines are fast becoming un-economical to repair and new engines are installed as the old ones are recycled. Cylinder heads are probably the most sought after reused engine parts making them the most engineered part of all engine peces.

If you are in the market to rebuild or remanufacture your engine you will need the services of a qualified engineer and professional engine builder that can supply you with a quality engine. The right choice of engines and engineering is the key to saving money in the long run together with a back up of spares knowledge. Your engineers are the ones who will often supply the engineering and machining works. They will completely remanufacture the entire engine to the last nut and bolt, trusting that they have a knowledgeable amount of performance and engine blueprinting skills, as this is where you will find the right balance in getting what you pay for.

Assembling an entire engine is a touchy process. Pistons and their bore must be the perfect match, just as bearings and their journals must be within thousands of a millimeter to live in the harsh life an engine is subjected to. In the assembly margins of error there must still lie a reliable means of determining whether the parts are a close enough fit to coincide with one another within the internal combustion engine. Your engineering shop and their engine builder needs to be trusted one hundred percent, so therefore you will require the services of an engineering business that can take care of you every need.

Towing

Towing and Recovery of vehicles is an integral part of the motoring industry. Tow trucks will always ensure safer road passages and keep us more complaisant on our roads. Motor vehicles have mechanical breakdowns and accidents thereby creating obstructions on the roads. Towing operators will always be at the root of the problem, assisting with roadside incidents and moving vehicles and obstacles out of harm’s way, providing hazard lights at the incident, often in extremely hazzardous conditions, including inclement weather. Generally tow trucks offer motorists unconditional roadside assistance very often without any reward.

The towing industry is governed by various organizations and clubs who curb the towing and recovery industry by offering guidelines for the public and towing industry as a whole. SATRA is one such organization and the foremost authority on towing services in South Africa. Although there are organizations such as these the towing industry is like any other business. Towing operators require only a public driving permit and an ‘operator’s vehicle licence disc’ to successfully trade in the towing and vehicle recovery arena.

Should you have experienced a breakdown or you have been involved in a motor vehicle accident you will probably are going to need the assistance of a tow truck. If have unfortunately sustained one of the above there are a hundred and one towing companies than can easily be found by Googling ‘towing’ in your area. Often private towing companies will get to you a lot sooner so it’s a good idea to have a number handy on your phone for ‘just in case’. Looking4spares is one such website that offers an Automotive Business Directory Service where you can find towing companies throughout South Africa. Remember to exchange all personal and vehicle particulars with the other driver involved should it be an accident, ensuring that you complete all the necessary paperwork.

Remember to call your insurance company or broker when your vehicle has been damaged and follow the correct procedures. Your claim could be negatively influenced by an incorrect proceduere. Should you require towing assistance, insist on an insurance approved towing operator in your area who will assist you with all your towing requirements.

Brake and Clutch

Brake and Clutch are the two components of a motor vehicle that you can usually have repaired at your local car service workshops or private mechanic. However, brakes and clutches are specialist parts that more than often need to be repaired by a specialist company that is better equipped and understandably, has a better knowledge of the relevant parts and engineering levels of expertise required to repair the brake or clutch problem that you are experiencing.

Brakes are the life-line of any motor vehicle. If you cant stop, you will inevitably end up being towed to the panelbeaters for extensive autobody repairs. Your brakes are probably the most important pieces of machinery on a vehicle. Brake components require maintenance unlike engine clutch assemblies on any engine. They will wear out and when this happens you will have to attend to the problem almost immediately. Brakes should last if quality parts are correctly fitted by your mechanic or brake specialist. Always insist on quality brake pads even if you are purchasing the brake pads yourself at your local spares shop and remember to take a sample with you. Check your brake rotors for excessive wear and scoring. Skim the brake discs  or drums and replace them as necessarry before fitting brake pads or relined brake shoes for best results.

Clutch kits and flywheels live under similar conditions as the brakes and also require periodic service and replacement. As with brake parts there are also many clutch manufacturers and re-manufacturers who offer clutch kits for sale. Remember that a clutch is not as easy to remove and refit as a set of brake callipers are, as it requires removing the gearbox. When replacing your clutch always ensure that you fit a quality compatible clutch kit which usually comprises of a pressure plate, clutch plate and thrust bearing. Check the flywheel for cracks, excessive wear and scoring and surface skim the face of the flywheel as necessarry.

A vehicles clutch is usually operated by a hydraulic or cable clutch assembly line. The hydraulic clutch basically comprises of a master cylinder and slave cylinder providing the thrust to release the pressure plate, thus allowing the clutch plate to rotate freely and enabling the gears to be selected as required. If your vehicle is fitted with a hydraulic clutch you will need to check that the hydraulics are extending completely to ensure long lasting mileage.

Panelbeaters

Panelbeaters are a place most drivers will come to deal with over a lifetime of driving. If you spend a great deal of time driving a motor vehicle your car will at some time or other require some Panelbeating and Spraypainting or Auto Spares to get it back to its original condition. Most often its not your fault, and if you are involved in a collision with another motor vehicle you must know what to do in the case of an emergency. Accidents happen and this is when you are going to have to find out where you can have your vehicle taken to and have it repaired.

The chances are that you will be on the road and before you realize you will be unindated with propositions from tow truck drivers. Therefore it is important to read your insurance policy and understand what you have to do if you are insured and your policy is up to date. If you have a broker then give them a call and they will inform you of which towing company is authorized to tow your vehicle where your car should be towed to and repaired. Most often the insurance company you have your cover with will send you a towing and recovery vehicle and deliver your vehicle to the panelbeaters workshops.

Either way your car will probably end up at the panelbeaters autobody repairs workshop for  panelbeating and spraypainting. If you are familiar with the panelbeaters and you have used them before ask your insurance company if they are on the insurance approved list before sending your vehicle there or you may have to have the vehicle removed and this will add to your costs.

Should you have no insurance in place and require the services of a panelbeater then you should find out where your vehicle is going before you sign up with any towing operator. If you are not sure what to do in the event of an accident, your best bet would be to have your vehicle towed home and pay cash for the towing and recovery untill you can decide on a good panelbeater to repair your vehicle.
